Located inside the Art Deco Welcome Center, the Art Deco Museum allows tourists and locals to better understand the architectural heritage and community culture of Miami Beach. Learn about the three major historic design styles in Miami Beach: Mediterranean Revival, Art Deco and Miami Modern (MiMo). Designed by the Miami Design Preservation League, the museum is educational and informative while still reflecting the fun and glamour of Miami Beach. The museum includes a resource center, children’s area, rotating exhibits and more.

Miami Beach is known for its distinctive architectural styles, influenced by various design movements throughout its history. Three major historic design styles in Miami Beach are:

Art Deco:
Art Deco is perhaps the most iconic architectural style associated with Miami Beach. It gained popularity in the 1920s and 1930s and is characterized by its geometric shapes, bold colors, and decorative elements. Miami Beach's Art Deco buildings often feature pastel-colored facades, rounded corners, glass block windows, and intricate detailing. The most famous concentration of Art Deco architecture can be found in the South Beach neighborhood, particularly along Ocean Drive.

Mediterranean Revival:
Mediterranean Revival architecture became prominent in Miami Beach during the 1920s and 1930s, inspired by the Mediterranean region's design elements. This style is characterized by red-tiled roofs, stucco exteriors, wrought-iron balconies and railings, arched doorways, and lush landscaping. The Mediterranean Revival style often gives buildings a timeless and elegant appearance. The Coral Gables area of Miami Beach is known for its Mediterranean Revival architecture.

MiMo (Miami Modern):
MiMo is a mid-20th-century architectural style that emerged in the post-World War II era and is closely associated with Miami Beach. MiMo buildings feature clean lines, asymmetrical facades, and the use of innovative materials like glass, concrete, and terrazzo. They often incorporate elements of space-age design and tropical motifs. The Fontainebleau Miami Beach and the Eden Roc Miami Beach Resort are iconic examples of MiMo architecture.

These three design styles have left a significant mark on the architectural landscape of Miami Beach and contribute to the city's vibrant and diverse visual identity.
