  Charles Nicoll Talbot
Charles' father, George Washington Talbot, was a prominent merchant in the China Trade, as a partner in the firm of King & Talbot, with offices in NYC and Canton, China. Charles joined his father in the trade at the age of 18, at which time he left for China and remained there as an agent for the next twelve years. He returned on 1833 and married Charlotte Richmond. He partnered with David W. C. Olyphant to form the firm of Olyphant & Talbot. They had a fleet of ships, among them the "Roman", "Morrison", and "Huntress", and carried missionaries to China, and returned with silks, teas, porcelains, etc. They refused to participate in the trade and transport of opium, a profitable and popular cargo of the time, and were nicknamed "Zion's Corner" for their piousness.Charles retired from the trade a wealthy merchant, and continued his support and pursuit of philanthropical endeavors supporting the American Seamen's Friend Society, with its
outgrowths — the Seamen's Home and the Seamen's Savings Bank. For a long period, and till
his death, he was a working member of the Board of Managers of the American Bible Society, and he was one of the committee who erected their building. The Deaf and Dumb and the
Half Orphan Asylums, and the Presbyterian Hospital, all shared his unwearied attention. He was senior director of the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company, with which he had been connected thirty years, and was also senior director of the Howard Fire Insurance Company.
